Stinger is the primary air defense weapon of the MANPADS, US Avenger, Linebacker,
Light Armored Vehicle-Air Defense (LAV-AD) and the only US Army Aviation
Air-to-Air missile. The multi-mission Stinger missile is deployed on over 2500
systems/platforms worldwide and is in service with all 4 US Armed Services and
over 18 allied nations. Stinger's unique two color infrared-ultraviolet detector and fire-and-forget technology ensure high survivability and maximum lethality, even in a heavy countermeasure environment. The Stinger missile system protects the total force while providing ground forces the freedom to maneuver. Stinger's combination of supersonic speed, agility, highly accurate guidance and control system and lethal warhead gives Stinger the operational edge against all classes of helicopters, UAVs, cruise missiles and fixed wing aircraft. Stinger has been combat tested. In Desert Storm, Stinger was deployed with every US service and coalition forces to provide high-value site defense, and to protect key political and industrial facilities. Stinger was also used to provide helicopter self-defense, protect naval vessels and provide close-in air defense of Patriot units and critical military assets. Stinger has defeated more modern hostile aircraft than any other fighter, helicopter, or missile system world-wide since WWII. Stinger's modular design has enabled the Stinger missile system, through upgrades in hardware and software, to maintain its technological edge and its greater than 90% reliability success rate, over the advanced threats of today and tomorrow. Hughes Missile Systems Company, through its ongoing Stinger Block 1 and Block 2 product improvement programs, will ensure Stinger capabilities remain ahead of the predicted threat at maximum stand-off ranges.
